30 DAYS OF NIGHT

Greetings gorehounds and fiends of frightful film scores, today I was handed the wonderfully creepy sounding original motion picture soundtrack for the vampire film 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, composed by Brian Reitzell, the former drummer for REDD KROSS and AIR. Reitzell made his transition from bands to films back in 1999, working on Sofia Coppola's THE VIRGIN SUICIDES as a music supervisor. His unique talents were quickly recognized, and he went on to work on  mores films like LOST IN TRANSLATION and STRANGER THAN FICTION, to name a few.
Brian Reitzell's ability to combine just the right sounds creates some of the most haunting soundscapes I've had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. It's not often that someone innovative comes along that really knows how to scare the listener using just music. The tracks heard on 30 DAYS OF NIGHT are a combination of digital samples and live recordings, layered together to create an atmosphere of tension that compliments the films dark and violent tone. Low frequency hums, bending dissonant chords, high frequency sawtooth waves, and industrial percussions are all utilized to enhance the feeling of helplessness felt by the survivors of the Alaskan slaughter at the hands of the merciless vampire killers.
Brian Reitzell reveals one of his tricks to creating such a unique sound for this soundtrack in the press kit I was handed with this CD. Allow me to quote: "I was trying to figure out the different sounds and colors and instruments to use. I thought if someone came at me with an ax or was trying to kill me or eat me, that was going to be such a horrific experience and was going to be totally new and unfamiliar, so I didn't think what I was going to hear was something like an orchestra". Reitzell  gerry rigged a pottery wheel from Home Depot, affixed various items like a drum stick or felt mallet, mic'd the contraption and stood back. "The pottery wheel can spin up to 280 rpm. You have to wear goggles and body armor. I was scared to death".
