Le' rue Delashay - REVALATIONS OF WAVE & FORM

Greetings Ghouls,
Today I'd like to share with you all the magical music of the wonderfully wicked composer Le' rue Delashay. A truely gifted musician, Delashay writes some of the most haunting classical music I've ever heard. His 4th and most recent solo album "The Revelations of Wave & Form" is by far his most impressive release to date. Abandoning the electronic synthesizer sounds of his previous release, "Revelations" embraces the traditional ochestral voices, creating a more realistic symphonic sound and contriving many memorable themes akin to the works of Jerry Goldsmith (THE OMEN) or John Williams (STAR WARS).

Le' rue Delashay's work has been featured on dozens of CDs, albums, and DVDs, as well Haunted Houses, Films, and commercial enterprises. Recently, Delashay has been composing music for films such as "33 Griffin Lane", "The Book of Lore", "The Deviants", and "Blood Deep" among others. Le' rue currently works as a technical advisor to some of Hollywood's elite composers, and also works as an Orchestrator in Los Angeles.

VAN HELSING’S CURSE – Oculus Infernum

1-Patience (Intro)
2-Tubular Hell
3-All Fall Down
4-Let Me Prey
5-The Child
6-The Tortured Soul
7-Revenge
8-War
9-Let the Pain Begin
10-The Curse
11-Halloween
12-Cry Little Sister

VAN HELSING’S CURSE is a musical journey through a vast library of haunting compositions that transport the listener to the frightening world of the Van Helsings. Drawing inspiration from such familiar horror composers like Mike Oldfield (The Exorcist), Jerry Goldsmith (The Omen), John Carpenter (Halloween), VHC delivers a heavy, doom metal sound that when merged with their orchestral instruments creates the perfect balance between the genres of metal and classical, or as I like to call it Symphonic-Metal. The 18 piece VHC orchestra offers a wide range of music that will satisfy the young and old, and the classical and metal fans, alike.

Credited as being the mastermind behind VAN HELSING’S CURSE concept and story, Dee Snider (TWISTED SISTER) has created a masterpiece with Oculus Infernum. Each track opens like a chapter to a story with a narrative from Snider. He tells the tale of the ongoing battle between the descendants of Van Helsing and the omnipotent Evil One.

The songs on Oculus Infernum are mostly instrumental, focusing largely on the featured soloists to determine the songs mood. In place of a vocalist, VHC utilizes choral arrangements sung in Latin by their druids to add another element of classical composition to their songwriting style. There is a creative rephrasing of song “Black Sabbath” which substitutes Ozzy Osbourne’s infamous lyrics with guitars, violins, and operatic vocals. There is also an excellent rendition of the song “Cry Little Sister” (a Goth fave made popular by the LOST BOYS soundtrack) where Dee Snider adds his vocal talents to the already massive sound of VHC, surpassing the original with their clever cover.

CANNIBAL FLESH RIOT!

Greetings Ghouls,
I want to share with you a delightfully wicked multi-media package from the morbid mind of Gris Grimly. CANNIBAL FLESH RIOT! is a clever 2 disc set, one movie DVD and one compilation CD, featuring 19 tracks of Psychobilly sickness. The movie CANNIBAL FLESH RIOT! is a Horror Comedy about 2 ghouls who are in the process of unearthing a corpse, when something out of routine occurs and they become main course.
The movie was filmed to look like an old Black & White silent film utilizing a lot of modern technology tricks (CGI, Video effects, stop animation, etc). The addition of some hilarious sound effects adds to the movie's overall campy feel. There is plenty of humorous dialog between the 2 ghouls, who actually have some very insightful conversations on their way to the cemetery grave plot. There are some nice extras on this DVD including a behind-the-scenes featurette called "Unearthing Cannibal Flesh Riot!", deleted scenes, bloopers, trailers, and a music video for the song "Cannibal Flesh Riot!".

The compilation CD cranks out some of Psychobilly's greatest ghouls.
Check out the insane artists that are featured:
1 - "Mad Creator Productions Theme" by Rani Sharone
2 - "Cannibal Flesh Riot! Trailer Spot" by Rafael Ferrer
3 - "Cannibal Flesh Riot! (choice cut)" by Hola Ghost
4 - "Bon Appetit" by The Untamed
5 - "The Ballad of Clarence Heckles" by Ghoultown
6 - "The Wrong Way Out" by The Death Riders
7 - "Grubbery (uncooked version)" by Stolen Babies
8 - "Death From Below" by Spooky DeVille
9 - "I Eat The Dead" by Psycho Charger
10 - "Kill Kill Kill" by The White Coffin Terror
11 - "The Eaters of the Dead" by The Order of the Fly
12 - "Love You More Dead" by The Black Rose Phantoms
13 - "How to Serve Man" by Creature Feature
14 - "The Ballad of Stash and Hub" by George Van Orsdel
15 - "Fade Away" by Nightbreed
16 - "The Ballad of Stash and Hub" by The Spectremen
17 - "I'll Watch Them Die" by Mister Monster
18 - "Gut Tongue" by More Than Never
19 - "Cannibal Flesh Riot!" by Blitzkid

I'd like to recommend this to the fans of horror comedies, and to the fans of Psychobilly alike. This is the perfect mixture of these 2 fraternal sub-genres into one package.

GWAR at Roseland Ballroom, NYC (Nov. 2nd, 2007)

This was my first review I ever wrote, back when I worked in the Fangoria office in Times Square NYC.

Greetings all you nefarious navigators of cyberspace, I’m coming to you from the FANGORIA offices, hidden deep within the labyrinth of New York City, to share with you my discoveries of delightfully wicked arrangements composed by artists whom might normally slip under the radar due to their macabre nature. Here at FANGORIA, we bring you the best that horror has to offer, and that is precisely what I intend to do with this FANGORIA MUSICK BLOG. With every resource available to me, I will search countless genres of music to find the most frightening artists that this sick and twisted world has to offer us horror fans.

But what exactly would we consider horror music? Shock rock, psychobilly, death metal, hardcore rap, industrial, ambient, classical? Some will argue that shocking theatrics are the embodiment of horror music, while others will claim it is the classical compositions scored specifically for a horror movie that are the truly frightful compositions. I could never decide on one all-encompassing definition for horror music. Instead, I like to include all genres and base my assessment on content, rather than category.

I would like to first write about shocking musicians, and save the classical composers for another blog entry. When it comes to shock rock, GWAR delivers some of the most graphic and depraved live shows to hit the stages of the world. With 20+ years of experience, there are few that can compete with GWAR ability to shock an audience. Decapitations, dismemberments, disembowelments, and rapes are all a part of the simulated violence that occurs on-stage that has brought GWAR a stature of infamy in the metal world. I like to call them the Gods of Gore. Even their names are godly. Oderus Urungus on lead vocalists, Balsac The Jaws of Death and Flattus Maximus on guitars, Beefcake The Mighty on bass, and Jizmak Da Gusha on drums.

GWAR can be classified under the Metal genre, but their dark sense of humor separates them from the many mediocre metal bands whom take themselves too seriously. GWAR is able to laugh at themselves, after they laugh in face of our everyday world. Their latest release, Beyond Hell, features an advancement of their musicianship toward a more progressive metal sound.  GWAR’s newer progressive writing can be heard on songs like “War Is All We Know”, "The Ultimate Bohab" and "Eighth Lock". The simply written, goofy songs styles are something of the past for GWAR. Their past 3 releases have showcased GWAR's ability to write clever metal songs, yet still retain their trademark dark humor, demonstrated on such tracks as "I Love The Pigs" and "Back In Crack". Beyond Hell also features a bonus track; a cover of the Alice Cooper classic "School's Out". Alice Cooper could be considered the first shock rocker, so how fitting that these Gods Of Gore would do a tribute to Alice with their rendition of one of his tunes.

The 5 members of GWAR appear as large, grotesque monsters set on destroying the human race. Their music sets the mood for violence as other characters walk through and interact with the band and the audience. These characters can resemble political figures like U.S. President G.W. Bush and Adolf Hitler, and some resemble religious figures like The Pope and Jesus. Each of these martyrs gets slaughtered by GWAR’s front man, whom is assisted by his slaves, minor characters whom act as stage hands to assist with large props. Each victim spews vile colored fluids from their wounds which spray all over the band and the audience  (now remember, this is all simulated and done with latex, rubber, and lots of food coloring), and it’s the slaves who control the mechanics of this violent charade.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of witnessing one of GWAR’s horrific performances when they played at The Roseland Ballroom as a part of the Viva La Bands tour, supporting C.K.Y. and Cradle Of Filth. GWAR was not headline, which meant their stage set up was a little smaller. Their usual setup has a total environment look, but this time they used a plain black stage and covered it with large tapestries depicting demonic figures.

GWAR played an impressive 11 song set, hammering through such classics as Saddam a Go-Go and Immortal Corrupter.
They say the show aint over until the fat lady sings, well at a GWAR show that fat lady is a giant T-Rex named GorGor that appears at the end of the show and completely destroys the stage. Although set seemed short for GWAR (no encore) and the stage seemed small, the sound was good and the band played tight, and when you're blood soaked and in the pit, that's all that really matters.

GWAR Roseland Ballroom, NYC.

Nov.  2nd, 2007.
Set List:
War Is All We Know
Crosstika
Go To Hell
Bring Back Da Bomb
Saddam A Go Go
Tormentor
Immortal Corrupter

CREATURE FEATURE - The Greatest Show Unearthed

Greetings Boils and Ghouls.
Today I'd like to share with you a recent discovery of a CD of wonderfully written songs charming Gothic listeners around the world with their ghoulish appeal. If you like the music of Tim Burton, Marilyn Manson, or Mike Patton, then CREATURE FEATURE will be a breath of fresh air from that stench of staleness that has permeated the recent releases by the aforementioned masters. The duo of Curtix RX (Guitar/Vocals) and Erik X (Synth/Samples) hail from Los Angeles, California, where they've performed infront of thousands of Goths at California's annual Bats Day at The Park. LIZZY BORDEN – Appointment with Death

LIZZY BORDEN’s latest release “Appointment with Death” is proof that after nearly 25 years of rocking, Lizzy’s still got more chops to deliver. The always theatrical Lizzy has added the face of Death to their look, revamping the band to appear undead. The entire album is themed around Death, and they’ve enlisted quite an impressive roster of guests musicians who lend their talents to the already well written songs. Performing solos on select  tracks are George Lynch , Dave Meniketti of Y&T, Cory Baeulieu of TRIVIUM, and Eric Rutan of HATE ETERNAL (who also mixed the CD giving it an extra heavy guitar sound).

30 DAYS OF NIGHT

Greetings gorehounds and fiends of frightful film scores, today I was handed the wonderfully creepy sounding original motion picture soundtrack for the vampire film 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, composed by Brian Reitzell, the former drummer for REDD KROSS and AIR. Reitzell made his transition from bands to films back in 1999, working on Sofia Coppola's THE VIRGIN SUICIDES as a music supervisor. His unique talents were quickly recognized, and he went on to work on  mores films like LOST IN TRANSLATION and STRANGER THAN FICTION, to name a few.
Brian Reitzell's ability to combine just the right sounds creates some of the most haunting soundscapes I've had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. It's not often that someone innovative comes along that really knows how to scare the listener using just music. The tracks heard on 30 DAYS OF NIGHT are a combination of digital samples and live recordings, layered together to create an atmosphere of tension that compliments the films dark and violent tone. Low frequency hums, bending dissonant chords, high frequency sawtooth waves, and industrial percussions are all utilized to enhance the feeling of helplessness felt by the survivors of the Alaskan slaughter at the hands of the merciless vampire killers.
Brian Reitzell reveals one of his tricks to creating such a unique sound for this soundtrack in the press kit I was handed with this CD. Allow me to quote: "I was trying to figure out the different sounds and colors and instruments to use. I thought if someone came at me with an ax or was trying to kill me or eat me, that was going to be such a horrific experience and was going to be totally new and unfamiliar, so I didn't think what I was going to hear was something like an orchestra". Reitzell  gerry rigged a pottery wheel from Home Depot, affixed various items like a drum stick or felt mallet, mic'd the contraption and stood back. "The pottery wheel can spin up to 280 rpm. You have to wear goggles and body armor. I was scared to death".

Track Listings:
1. Prelude/Last Day Of Sun
2. Girl Bait
3. Muffin Monster
4. Soon There Will Be Just 5
5. Vampires On The Horizon
6. They Didn't Take Me

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER – Nocturnal

Today I’d like to share with you a devilishly delightful death metal CD that delivers jaw dropping intensity and relentless rhythmic patterns. Rarely have I receive a CD that appealed to me so quickly like this one did. “Nocturnal” is a masterpiece of intricate song writing, sweet guitar solos, mind-blowing drumming, ruthless riffing, and dark lyrics that only THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER could create. Covering such topics as serial killers, suicide, necrophilia, and misanthropy, this CD is a blood soaked opus of horrific prose.

THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER has set the bar a little higher with their third release, "Nocturnal". Their trademark brutal yet melodic style has been fine-tuned with the addition of a new drummer and a new bassist. The band now consists of Trevor Strnad on Vocals, Brian Eschbach on Guitars, John Kempainen on Guitar, and featuring ex- ALL THAT REMAINS drummer Shannon Lucas, and Ryan "Bart" Williams on Bass.
